UPDATE: The research question has again been changed.

With the advent of the social media world taking on such prominence in organisational communication, the question is now this one:

What effect has social media had on business communicators of ten-plus years experience?” [Too broad]

So we’ve reduced the question to this:

Can Symbolic Convergence Theory be used to analyse and redirect messages that an organisation sends out via Twitter?”

************************************************

I *was* conducting research into 3D virtual worlds from an SME (Small to Medium-sized Enterprise) perspective [more details here].

But for various reasons that fell over.

So I have to start again.

Luckily for me the research question second time around is a lot more focused and a lot easier to approach.

My first research question was, “What value is thereĀ for SMEs in 3D virtual worlds?”

Well, I quickly found out that the answer was a very simple one, but it was going to be difficult to fill up an 80,000 word thesis with it:

“Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all.”

It gets a bit repetitive after a while: “Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all. Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all. Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all. Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all. Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all. Nil. None. Nix. Zero. Zilch. Bugger all…”

But a chance meeting with David Corkindale at my uni put me onto a new path and saved my sanity (what was left of it); to with the new research question is this:

“What decision-making processes did you use to arrive at a decision to enter into a 3D virtual world?”

Simple, elegant and a damn sight easier to find 80-odd thousand words about than my previous question.
